What Fun Our Weekend Was

Here's the "red button" version of our Memorial Weekend. I say "red button" because Alisha has a red button switch she travels back and forth to school with for communication. Every day I record on the "red button" what she did the night before. It's brief but informative.

Friday delivered the long awaited Prom event. Our daughter, Hannah, looked stunning in her wedding prom dress. I keep reminding myself I get to spend more money one day when she weds, which I anticipate happening long after we have financially recovered from prom. She felt like a princess, danced like a princess, and looked like a princess. Priceless.

Later that evening the rest of the Fam went to Caleb's baseball practice. We don't usually all go to practice. Matter of fact, I strategically work the schedule to see this rarely happens. I always say to our kids, practice is for you to show me in a game what you learned. But alas it made more sense to stop on our way home from the paparazzi of prom to sit at his practice. Practicality always trumps inconvenience. There's not much more to say on this part of our weekend other than we found a cell phone on the ground and half way through practice a man sped up to the field, leapt out of his car and practically kissed Jeff when he gave him his phone. I love happy endings.

Saturday held a laundry list of Laho work. We moved most of Alisha's things back into her now freshly painted and carpeted bedroom. I say most because I found about two boxes of "mystery" items I collected over the years. The kind of items you say to yourself, "This will come in handy when the kids have a science project." Apparently science fairs are a thing of the past in school so I am going to bring myself to pitch those boxes. I know you want to know what color the walls and carpet are- Silvery Grey. (Grey sounds like a downer color. I prefer to add the silvery part to enhance your visualization.)

Sunday ended up being a rest day. The kids were out for the afternoon. Dad came over for steak and bumpy cake. Bumpy cake being the ultimate Laho reward. His reward for a job well done. (The Silvery Grey room) In the evening, the kids were still out. Jeff, Alisha and I drove to Murray Lake to keep the "rest" going. Jeff caught fish and I read a book. Alisha attracted mosquitos.

Monday we drove back to Murray Lake. It's a nice eight minute scenic drive. We made the kids come with us. What's family fun if they aren't there? We played a bit of baseball and I gave my family some good stand-up comedy material. I love to sacrifice when I get the chance. Let's just say, I use to know how to throw a baseball. As Caleb informed his dad, "Don't try to help her. She'll never get better." Jeff's response, "Yeah, she throws worse than a girl." And Caleb's last jab, "She throws like a grandma." Because I have a sense of humor I chimed in, "Let's not insult the grandmas."

On our way home we stopped at the cemetery to remember my mom and Kodey. They were handing out flags at the cemetery in honor of Memorial Day. It made me wish we had tried to go to a Memorial service or parade. I did talk to the kids about the meaning of the day though. I asked them if they knew what it was. Caleb, never one to not know something, said, "When our country was born. You know, when we do fireworks." That led to a much needed conversation about the meaning of Memorial Day.

To end our weekend Hannah passed segment two of driver's ed. Yahoo! Friends consistently tell me how happy I will be when I have another driver in the house. I think I'm finally ready to find out.
